RV Shower Repair

RV showers take a beating. Here's why they fail.

RV shower and plumbing system being serviced by a mobile technician in Port St. Lucie

RV showers take a beating. The shower pan flexes every time you step in it, the drain connection gets stressed from road vibration, and Florida's hard water leaves calcium deposits in the faucet cartridge and showerhead faster than you'd expect. We see shower problems year-round in Port St. Lucie, but they spike in snowbird season when rigs come out of storage and owners discover issues that developed while the RV was sitting.

The shower pan is the most common failure point. Unlike a house shower with a tiled floor and a proper P-trap, an RV shower pan is a single piece of plastic or fiberglass that sits on the subfloor with a drain fitting through the bottom. That drain connection is sealed with a rubber gasket and a compression nut. Over time, the gasket dries out, the pan flexes enough to break the seal, and water starts getting underneath the pan and into the subfloor. You might not notice it for weeks because the water runs under the pan and out the belly wrap.

The faucet side is usually simpler. Most RV showers use a single-handle mixer valve with a cartridge inside. When the cartridge fails, you get drips, temperature swings, or a handle that won't turn. Diverter valves (the switch that sends water from the tub spout to the showerhead) also wear out and start leaking. We carry common cartridges and diverter assemblies on the truck so most of these are one-visit fixes.

Common Problems

6 RV shower problems we fix every week.

01

"Water leaking under the shower pan"

Almost always the drain gasket or the connection between the pan and the drain fitting. The pan flexes every time someone steps in, and that movement eventually breaks the seal. $100-180 to reseal or replace the gasket. Don't ignore this one - water damage underneath gets expensive fast.

02

"Shower faucet drips when it's turned off"

Worn cartridge inside the single-handle valve. In Florida's hard water, calcium builds up on the cartridge and grinds away the seals. A new cartridge runs $80-140 installed and stops the drip completely. We stock the common sizes from Dura Faucet and Phoenix Faucets on the truck.

03

"Low water pressure in the shower only"

Usually a clogged showerhead (calcium buildup) or a partially closed valve under the vanity. If pressure is fine at the kitchen sink but weak at the shower, the problem is between the two. Could also be a kinked line behind the wall. We'll trace it down and fix it.

04

"Shower diverter won't switch to the showerhead"

The diverter valve is stuck or the internal seal has failed. Water either won't go to the showerhead at all, or it splits between the showerhead and the tub spout at the same time. Quick replacement, usually $70-120. We carry the common diverter assemblies.

05

"Shower drain is slow or backing up"

Hair and soap buildup in the drain fitting or the P-trap. RV P-traps are smaller than residential ones and clog faster. We clear the blockage and check for any cracks in the drain assembly while we're in there. Usually runs $80-150 depending on what we find.

06

"Soft floor around the shower area"

Water has been getting past the pan seal and soaking the subfloor. The shower repair itself might be $100-180, but the floor damage could be more involved. We'll fix the leak and give you an honest read on the floor condition so you can decide how to proceed.

Brands We Work On

Dura, Phoenix, American Brass, and more.

Every RV shower faucet brand has its own cartridge design, mounting pattern, and quirks. Here's what we see most often in Port St. Lucie and across the Treasure Coast, and what you should know about each one.

Dura Faucet

Common in newer RVs and aftermarket upgrades. Cartridge-style single handle with a clean, modern look. According to Dura Faucet's product line, these are designed specifically for RV water pressure and PEX connections. The cartridges are readily available and we keep the most common ones on the truck. Solid brand, and the parts are easy to source when something does wear out.

Phoenix Faucets

Very common across all RV manufacturers, especially in travel trailers and fifth wheels. Phoenix uses a proprietary cartridge that's slightly different from standard residential sizes, but we stock them. The single-handle models are the most popular. These faucets hold up well, but after 4-5 years in Florida hard water, the cartridge seals start to go. Quick swap once you've got the right part.

American Brass

Found in older rigs and some budget-line trailers. Replacement parts are still available, which is good news if you've got a vintage rig. The cartridge style is different from Dura and Phoenix, so make sure you've got the right one before ordering. We can identify your model on-site and get the correct parts.

Oxygenics Showerheads

The most popular aftermarket showerhead upgrade for RVs. Oxygenics heads use a pressure-boosting design that makes low RV water pressure feel stronger without using more water. We install these all the time - it's one of the best upgrades you can do for under $80. Works with standard RV shower hose connections. Also good at resisting calcium buildup compared to cheaper heads.

Standard RV Shower Pan Drain Assemblies

Most RV manufacturers use similar drain assemblies regardless of brand. The drain fitting, rubber gasket, and compression nut are pretty universal across Jayco, Forest River, Thor, Winnebago, and others. We carry the common sizes and gaskets on the truck. If your drain assembly is cracked or corroded, we can replace the whole thing on-site.

Shower faucet wouldn't stop dripping no matter how hard we turned it. Calcium had destroyed the cartridge. Tech had the right one on the truck and swapped it in 30 minutes. No more drip, no more wasted water.

Shower pressure dropped to almost nothing overnight. Turned out the showerhead was completely clogged with calcium from the well water at our park. New Oxygenics head installed, pressure is better than it ever was.

FAQ

RV shower repair questions we hear all the time.

How much does RV shower repair cost in Port St. Lucie?

Most shower repairs run $80-250. A faucet cartridge swap is on the low end at $80-140. A shower pan drain reseal runs $100-180. If the shower pan itself is cracked, that's $120-200 for the repair. We give you a written estimate before starting any work.

Can you fix a leaking RV shower on-site?

Yes, we fix RV showers on-site every week. Drain seal replacements, faucet cartridge swaps, diverter repairs, and showerhead replacements are all done at your location. We carry the common parts on the truck so there's usually no need for a second visit.

How do I know if my RV shower pan is leaking?

Check for soft spots on the floor right outside the shower. Look under the RV after a shower for drips. If the floor feels spongy when you step near the shower door, water has likely been getting past the drain seal. Don't wait on this one - floor damage gets expensive fast.

Can you replace an RV shower faucet with a residential one?

Not usually. RV plumbing runs at different pressures and uses different connection sizes than residential. We recommend RV-specific faucets from Dura or Phoenix. They're designed for the lower flow rates and 1/2" PEX connections in your rig.

Why does my RV shower water go from hot to cold?

Failing cartridge in the mixing valve, or the water heater can't keep up. A 6-gallon RV water heater gives you about 8-10 minutes of hot water. If it swings from scalding to cold, the cartridge isn't mixing properly. $80-140 to replace it, and that usually fixes it completely.

My RV has been in storage and the shower smells bad - why?

Dried-out P-trap. When the RV sits unused, the water in the P-trap evaporates and lets sewer gas from the grey tank come back up through the drain. Run water in the shower for 30 seconds to refill the trap. If the smell persists, the P-trap itself might be cracked.

Need other RV plumbing work?

We handle all RV plumbing repairs - water pumps, water heaters, pipe leaks, tank valves, toilet rebuilds, and more. If you've got multiple plumbing issues, we can knock them all out in one service call across Port St. Lucie and the Treasure Coast.
